Troubleshooting & FAQ

Wispen Keyboard

The keyboard only shows letters and a note about Full Access

Dictation needs Full Access. In the Settings app, go to General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Wispen and turn on Allow Full Access. See why it's needed.

Tapping the microphone opens the Wispen app

That's expected the first time, and whenever the microphone isn't already ready. iOS often doesn't give keyboards the microphone, so the Wispen app records for the keyboard. Go back to your app with the link in the top-left corner and keep talking. To skip the trip next time, set Settings › Dictation › Wispen Keyboard › Keep Microphone Ready to 1, 5 or 15 minutes.

The orange microphone dot stays on after I dictate

That's Keep Microphone Ready holding the microphone for your next keyboard dictation. Nothing is recorded during that time. To turn it off, set Keep Microphone Ready to Off.

Keyboard dictations show up as notes

Settings › Dictation › Wispen Keyboard › Save as Notes is on by default. Turn it off to stop saving them.

"Open the Wispen app to start dictating, then come back to this keyboard."

The keyboard couldn't open Wispen. Open the Wispen app yourself, then switch back to your app and try again.

Mac

Dictated text is copied but not pasted

If you see "Copied — grant Accessibility access to paste automatically", Wispen doesn't have the Accessibility permission. Turn on Wispen in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. Also check that Settings › Shortcuts › Auto-Paste Text at Cursor is on.

The shortcut doesn't do anything

  • Check that Settings › Shortcuts › Enable Global Shortcuts is on.
  • Another app may use the same shortcut. Pick a different one in Dictation Shortcut.
  • If you see "Finish the dictation in Wispen first.", a dictation is running in a Wispen note. Stop it, then try again.

Holding Fn opens the emoji picker or dictation

Set Press 🌐 key to to Do Nothing in System Settings › Keyboard, or choose a different Hold-to-Talk Key.

"Partly typed live — the full text is on your clipboard."

With Type While Speaking on, part of the dictation was typed live and Wispen couldn't safely add the rest. The full text is on your clipboard; paste it if anything is missing.

Command Mode or AI styles don't work

They need Apple Intelligence on a Mac that supports it. Turn it on in System Settings. Settings › AI Styles shows Ready when it's available. Without it, dictation is inserted as spoken.

Dictation and models

The first dictation takes a long time to start

The first few times a Whisper or Parakeet model loads, your device prepares it, which can take a few minutes. Later loads are faster. To make the first dictation after opening Wispen faster, keep Settings › Speech Models › Load Model When Wispen Opens on.

My language isn't recognized

Some models only understand English, and Parakeet Ultra doesn't cover Japanese, Chinese or Korean. Check the message on Settings › Dictation, and choose a multilingual model in Settings › Speech Models.

"Apple Speech doesn't support [language] on this device."

Choose another language in Settings › Dictation, or switch to a Whisper model.

Dictation stops too early, or never stops on its own

Adjust Settings › Dictation › Pause Length, or turn off Stop When I Stop Talking. In a noisy room, raise Settings › Speech Models › Speech Detection. For quiet speech, turn on Whisper Mode.

A name keeps coming out wrong

Add it to Vocabulary in the Dictionary, or add a Replacement for the way it's misheard.

Ordinary words turn into formatting or punctuation

Formatting commands need "Hey Wispen" first. If words like "period" or "comma" should stay as words, turn off Settings › Text Cleanup › Spoken Punctuation.

Notes and sync

My notes aren't syncing

Check Settings › iCloud › Status. Make sure you're signed in to iCloud on each device, iCloud Sync is on, and your iCloud storage isn't full. If you just changed the setting, quit and reopen Wispen.

"Original audio recording file is unavailable on this device"

Audio from imported files stays on the device you imported it on and doesn't sync. Play it back there.

Speaker labels didn't change my note

If Wispen hears only one speaker, it leaves the transcript as it is. Speaker labels also need recordings of 2 hours or less.

I deleted a note by mistake

Open Recently Deleted at the bottom of the note list and tap Recover. Notes stay there for 30 days. To get back an earlier version of a note, use History.

FAQ

Do I need an account?

No. Wispen has no accounts. iCloud sync uses your Apple Account.

Does Wispen work offline?

Yes, once your speech model is ready. Apple's SpeechAnalyzer needs to download your language once, and other models need to be downloaded once.

Does Wispen upload my audio?

No. See Privacy & Data for the one case where Apple's classic speech engine may use Apple's servers.

How do I get help?

In Wispen, go to Settings › Help & Feedback › Email Support, or write to support@oddomens.com.
