Focus Types

A focus type labels what you're doing in a session, such as Reading or Coding. Each type has its own level and XP, and your history and analytics break down time by type.

Choose a focus type

  1. On the main screen, tap the focus type button below the presets. It shows the current type's icon and name.
  2. Under What are you focusing on?, tap a type.

The sheet closes and the button shows your choice. You can't change the focus type during a session.

Built-in focus types

Distant includes 29 focus types, listed under PRESETS.

Device-Free

Device-Free blocks every app category during the session instead of only the apps in your Block Apps list. It's marked All Apps in the list and (All Apps) on the main screen. See App Blocking.

Infinite Focus

Choosing Infinite Focus switches the timer to an open-ended session that counts up. It needs Full Access. Sessions with this type count toward the Infinite achievements. See Focus Sessions.

Custom focus types

Custom types need Full Access.

Create a custom type

  1. Open the focus type sheet.
  2. Under CUSTOM, tap Add New.
  3. Enter a NAME, such as "Deep Work" or a project name.
  4. Pick an ICON. There are 88 to choose from, covering work, learning, creative, health, social, entertainment, home, nature and general symbols.
  5. Pick a COLOR from 13 options: blue, cyan, teal, mint, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, indigo, brown and gray.
  6. Check the PREVIEW card, then tap Create Focus Type.

The new type appears under CUSTOM and in the Levels screen.

Edit or delete a custom type

Touch and hold a custom type in the focus type sheet, then:

  • Tap Edit to change its name, icon or color, then tap Save Changes. If you rename it, Distant updates the name on all past sessions with that type.
  • Tap Delete to remove it. There's no confirmation. Past sessions keep the type's name in your history.
