Chat, Social & Rules

How chat, friends and parties work, how to report someone, and the rules every player agrees to. The full rules are in the Salvo Terms of Service.

Chat

KeyOpens
TChat to everyone in the room
YTeam chat (team modes only; in Free For All it goes to everyone)

While typing, press Tab to switch between Everyone, Team and replying to your last private message. Type /help to list the commands.

  • Messages can be up to 120 characters.
  • You can send 3 messages quickly, then one every 2 seconds. Faster than that and you'll see "You are sending messages too fast."
  • A filter replaces swearing and slurs with asterisks. It catches misspellings, look-alike letters and spaced-out words. It's always on and also applies to private messages, usernames and class names.

Chat commands

CommandWhat it does
/helpLists the commands (also /commands or /?)
/pm <name> <message>Private message to a player in the same room (also /w, /msg, /whisper, /tell, /dm)
/r <message>Replies to your last private message (also /reply)
/report <name> <reason>Reports a player to the admins
/ignore <name>Hides a player's chat and private messages while you're on that game server (also /block or /mute)
/unignore <name>Shows them again (also /unblock or /unmute)
/playersLists who's in the room, with their ping (also /who or /list)
/timeTime left in the match (also /timeleft)
/pingYour ping
/respawnPuts you back on the firing line (Firing Range only)

Mute a player

Click a player's name in a match lobby, or in the Players tab of the in-match menu, and choose Mute. Their chat and messages are hidden for you on every device you sign in on. Choose Unmute to undo it. You can mute up to 300 players.

Friends

Add friends on the Play tab: type a name in Add a friend by name and choose Add. You can also click a player's name in a lobby or the Players tab and choose Add friend. From the same menu, choose Invite to party to invite a friend. If you both send a request, you become friends straight away.

The friends list shows who's In the menu, In a match (with the mode and room) or Offline. You can have up to 200 friends and 50 requests waiting at once.

Parties

A party holds up to 4 players, so you can invite up to 3 friends.

  • Only friends can be invited. Invites expire after 5 minutes.
  • The leader (marked with ★) picks the match. When the leader joins a room, the rest of the party follows.
  • Parties are put on the same team.
  • The leader can Invite, Kick or hand over the lead with Lead. Anyone can Leave.
  • Party members show a party mark beside their names in the lobby and on the scoreboard.

A member who's been offline for 90 seconds drops out of the party.

Messages and mail

The menu's top bar has two inboxes. Both show an unread count, and new items pop up as a notice, even in a match.

  • Messages: private messages with your friends, outside matches. Messages can be up to 300 characters. Only friends can message you.
  • Mail: friend requests and party invites to Accept, Join or Decline, plus mail from the Salvo team. Mail shows for 90 days. Delete removes it from your inbox only.

Report a player

  1. Click the player's name in a match lobby, or in the Players tab of the in-match menu.
  2. Choose Report….
  3. Pick a reason: Cheating, Abusive chat, Hate speech or slurs, Offensive name, Spamming, May be under 13 or Other.
  4. Optionally describe what happened, then choose Send report.

You can also type /report <name> <reason> in chat.

Each report includes the last 20 chat messages in the room, plus the room, map and mode, so the admins can see what happened. You can report the same player once every 5 minutes, and send up to 3 reports a minute. Bots can't be reported.

Rules

By playing Salvo you agree to these rules from the Terms of Service:

  • One account per person. Don't share, sell or trade accounts, and don't make new accounts to get around a ban.
  • No cheating. No aimbots, wallhacks, macros, modified game clients or automated play.
  • No exploits. Don't abuse bugs, and don't boost or farm XP and stats, for example by trading kills with a friend.
  • No attacks on the game. Don't attack, overload or probe the servers.
  • Be decent. No harassment, hate speech, threats, sexual content or spam.
  • Keep names clean. No offensive usernames or class names, and don't pretend to be staff.
  • Respect privacy. Don't share other people's personal information.
  • No real-money trading of accounts or in-game items.

Fair play

The game server makes every important decision, so a modified game can't change the outcome:

  • The server checks movement, ammo, fire rate, spread, damage, kills and your loadout's unlocks.
  • Hits are checked against where players really were, allowing for your real ping up to a limit of 300 ms.
  • Your game is only sent the positions of enemies you can actually see, or who are within 7 m. Wallhacks have nothing to show.
  • At the end of each match, aim that looks automated is flagged for a person to review. Nobody is banned for cheating on a flag alone.

Matches where an admin changes the game by hand don't count toward XP, stats or rankings, and everyone in the room is told.

Staff badges

Staff and some players have a badge beside their name in chat, the kill feed, scoreboards and lobbies:

BadgeRole
Gold shield with a starAdmin
Green shield with a check markModerator
Purple starVIP (cosmetic only)

What happens if you break the rules

Depending on what happened, staff can:

  • Warn you.
  • Mute you in a match, for 10 minutes by default.
  • Kick you from a room. You can't rejoin that room for 5 minutes.
  • Ban you from chat for 1 hour, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, 30 days or permanently. A chat ban blocks match chat and private messages.
  • Make you change your username.
  • Reset your stats.
  • Suspend your account for a set time or permanently, or block your network.
  • Delete your account.

When you're chat-banned, trying to chat shows how long the ban has left and the reason. When your account is suspended, you see This account is banned with the end date and reason when you sign in.

In Hardcore, killing 3 teammates in one room gets you kicked from it. See Game Modes.
