Organizing Assets
Everything you add to an asset in Beaver, such as tags, ratings and notes, is stored in Beaver's library. Your original files aren't changed.
The inspector
Click an asset to select it. The inspector opens on the right with everything Beaver knows about it. Click Toggle Inspector in the header to hide or show it.
From top to bottom, the inspector shows:
| Section | What it does |
|---|---|
| Preview | A larger preview with a file type badge. Hover and click to open the file in its default app. Audio files show a player instead, and videos play with controls. |
| Remove Background | Shown for PNG, JPG, JPEG and WebP images. See Managing Files. |
| Color palette | Up to six dominant colors from the image. Click a swatch to copy its hex code. |
| Rating | One to five stars. |
| Title | A display name for the asset. When set, it replaces the file name on cards and in the viewer. The file itself isn't renamed. |
| Notes | Free-form notes. |
| Source URL | Where the asset came from. Once saved, the link appears under the field and you can click it to open the page. |
| Tags | The tags on this asset, plus a list of other tags you can add. |
| Folder | The linked folder the asset belongs to. Click it to show the file in Finder. |
| Properties | Type, file size, pixel dimensions (for images) and the date Beaver added it. Below that is the full file path, with a button to copy it. |
Title and source URL save when you press Return or click away from the field. Notes save when you click away.
Tags
Tags are colored labels you can put on any number of assets.
Create a tag
- Hover over the Tags heading in the sidebar and click +.
- Type a name.
- Pick one of the six colors.
- Click Add.
Tag an asset
- Select the asset.
- In the inspector's Tags section, find the tag in the list below your current tags. Type in Find tag… to narrow the list.
- Click the tag to add it.
To remove a tag from an asset, click the × on the tag in the inspector.
Browse by tag
Click a tag in the sidebar to see every asset with that tag. The Untagged view shows assets that still need tags.
Ratings
In the inspector, click a star to rate an asset from one to five. Click the same star again, or click Clear, to remove the rating.
Ratings show on cards when Star Ratings is on in Settings. You can sort any view by Rating from the toolbar.
Favorites
Hover over a card and click the heart in its bottom-right corner, or click the heart in the top-left of the inspector preview. Favorited assets keep the heart visible and appear in the Favorites view. Click the heart again to remove the favorite.
Color palettes
When Beaver indexes a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF image, it picks out the six most common colors and shows them in the inspector. Click any swatch to copy its hex value, for example #3c80f4, to the clipboard.
