AI Features
Abysm's AI features use Apple's on-device language model, the one behind Apple Intelligence. Your dreams are processed on your iPhone and are not sent to Odd Omens or any AI company.

Requirements
- An iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in the iOS Settings app.
- AI Features turned on in Abysm's Settings. It's on by default.
If Apple Intelligence isn't available, interpretations, stories and AI Insight still work, but use simpler built-in versions described below. The two chat features need Apple Intelligence.
Dream interpretations
An interpretation looks at what the dream might reflect: the emotions, situations and symbols in it. It's written in two to four paragraphs, with key symbols in bold.
- Open a dream, tap •••, and choose Interpret Dream.
- Tap Interpret Dream on the Unlock Hidden Meanings screen.
- Wait while it shows Analyzing your dream....
The interpretation is based on the description and on whether the dream was recurring, lucid or a nap, plus its locations. It's saved with the dream, so it's there the next time you open this screen.
- Tap Regenerate Interpretation to get a new one. The new one replaces the one shown.
- Tap View Past Interpretations to read every interpretation you've generated for this dream, newest first.
Without Apple Intelligence, Abysm writes a shorter interpretation from common dream symbols it finds in your description and the overall tone of what you wrote.
Dream stories
A dream story retells your dream as a short piece of fiction written to "you", in two to four paragraphs. It uses what you wrote and the people and locations on the entry, and it isn't meant to add things that weren't in the dream.
- Open a dream, tap •••, and choose Generate Story.
- Tap Generate Story.
The story is saved with the dream.
- Tap Regenerate Story to get a new version.
- Tap View Past Stories to read earlier versions, newest first.
Without Apple Intelligence, Abysm builds a short story from a template using your description and the entry's flags.
Chat with a dream
Chat with Dream opens a conversation about one dream. The chat knows the dream's description, tags, people, locations and its saved interpretation, if it has one.
- Open a dream, tap •••, and choose Chat with Dream.
- Type in Ask about this dream... and tap the send button.
Tap the reset button (circular arrow) to start over. The conversation isn't saved. It's cleared when you leave the screen.
Dream Guide
The Chat tab is the Dream Guide. It knows your 15 most recent dreams, including their descriptions, dates and saved interpretations, so you can ask about patterns across your journal.
- Open the Chat tab.
- Type in Ask about your dreams... and tap the send button.
- Tap the reset button (circular arrow) in the top left to clear the conversation and start over.
- Tap the keyboard button in the top right to hide the keyboard.
The conversation isn't saved, so it's cleared when you reset it or Abysm closes.
AI Insight
The AI Insight card at the top of the Analytics tab writes two or three sentences about your patterns for the selected year, such as your streaks, the most common themes, people and locations, and how often you have lucid dreams or nightmares.
- Open the Analytics tab.
- Tap the sparkle button on the AI Insight card.
You need at least three entries in the selected year. The insight isn't saved, and it's cleared when you change the year. Without Apple Intelligence, the card shows a short built-in observation instead.
Turn AI features off
Turn off AI Features in Settings to hide all of the above. The Chat tab disappears, the AI options leave the ••• menu, and the AI Insight card is hidden. Stories and interpretations you already generated stay saved with your dreams and come back when you turn the setting on again.
