Library & Writing

The Library is where you write. It holds books, which are made of chapters, and loose pages, which are standalone pieces that don't belong to a book.

The Library page

Click Library in the sidebar. The page has:

  • Volumes & Tomes: a spotlight for the selected book, with Open Book, Edit Details and Delete, and Your Shelf, which shows every book as a spine. Click a book on the shelf to select it.
  • Loose Pages: your standalone pages, most recently edited first, each with a preview, word count, last-edited date and status.
  • A Search library... box that filters books by title or author and loose pages by title.

Create a book

  1. Click New Book.
  2. Enter a Title, and optionally a Subtitle, Author, Genre, Type and Description (the back-cover blurb).
  3. Pick Cover and Spine colors. The Preview shows how the book will look on the shelf.
  4. Click Create Book.

Genre can be Fantasy, Horror, Romance, Mystery, Historical, Sci-Fi or Other. Type can be Book, Tome, Journal, Scroll, Letter or Grimoire. To change these later, select the book and click Edit Details.

Deleting a book moves it to the Trash. Its chapters aren't deleted. They become loose pages.

Create a loose page

Click New Loose Page (or + New in the Loose Pages section), give it a title and click Create. The editor opens. Hover over a loose page to rename or delete it.

Book pages

Click Open Book to see a book's details and chapters. The left side shows the cover, title, author, genre and type, with the number of Chapters and Words.

The Chapters panel has two views:

  • List: each chapter's number, title, word count, estimated reading time, last edited date and status. Drag a chapter by its handle to reorder; chapters are renumbered to match.
  • Outline: a card for each chapter with a short preview of its text.

Click Add Chapter, give it a title and click Add Chapter again to add a chapter at the end and start writing. Hover over a chapter in List view to delete it. Deleted chapters go to the Trash.

The editor

Chapters and loose pages open in a paged editor that looks like a printed book. Text flows from page to page as you type, and each page shows the book name and page number at the bottom.

  • Each line is a paragraph.
  • Click Scene to insert a scene break (* * *) at the cursor.
  • Paste brings in plain text only.

Your work saves about a second after you stop typing, and again when you leave the chapter. The header shows Saving…, Unsaved, Saved or Save failed, and the Save button saves immediately.

Writing streak and goals

Each day you save a chapter counts toward your writing streak, shown on the Overview page. The Overview page also has a Story word goal for all the chapters in the world.

Compile and export a book

  1. Open the book and click Compile.
  2. Choose a format:
