AfternoonRelease 2026.10.1

Habits

A habit is something you repeat. It appears every day from its start date until its end date (or forever if it has none). You can track it as a simple yes or no, or set a goal such as 8 glasses a day or 3 sessions a week.

Create a habit

You can create a habit three ways:

  • Pick starter habits during first-time setup.
  • Use Quick Add with the habit type selected.
  • Open the menu, tap Manage Habits, then tap +.

The New Habit form has:

FieldWhat it does
EmojiTap the circle at the top to pick an emoji. Afternoon suggests one based on the name you type. Only shown when Show Emojis is on.
TitleThe habit's name
Description (Optional)Shown when you expand the habit
Start DateThe first day the habit appears
TimeWhen you plan to do it. Timed habits are sorted by time and appear in the Planner.

Tap the checkmark at the top right to save.

TIP

New habits get a time by default. To add a goal, reminders or an end date, or to remove the time, save the habit first, then open it again and use the ... menu.

Edit a habit

Double tap a habit's name in your day list, or tap it in Manage Habits. The Edit Habit screen has a ... menu at the top right with these options:

OptionWhat it does
Show descriptionShows or hides the description field
Set specific timeAdds or removes the habit's time
Set end dateAdds an End Date. The habit stops appearing after it.
Enable remindersAdds a Reminders section. See Reminders for a habit.
Set goal trackingAdds Goal Settings and Progress. See Goals.
Show in Summary BannerFor goal habits. Shows it in the Period Goals banner.
Mid-Period ReminderFor weekly, monthly and yearly goals. See Mid-period check-ins.
Archive / UnarchiveHides the habit from your day without deleting its history
DeleteDeletes the habit and its history. This can't be undone.

When you edit an existing habit, the screen also shows an Analytics section. See Habit stats.

Completing and skipping

Tap a habit's checkbox to move through three states:

  1. Done. The checkbox fills with a check.
  2. Skipped. The checkbox changes to a ring and the name dims. Use this for rest days or days that don't apply.
  3. Not done. Back to empty.

Skipped days are counted under Skipped instead of Missed in your stats, and they don't count against that day's completion ring. A skip doesn't count as a completion, so it still ends a daily streak.

You can only complete habits for today or earlier.

Goals

Turn on Set goal tracking to measure an amount instead of a simple check.

Goal Settings:

  • Goal amount. Use – and +, or tap the number to type one (up to 99,999). Increment by sets the step: 1, 5, 10, 25 or 50.
  • Unit. Minutes, Hours, Sessions, Pages, Lessons, Miles, Laps, Reps, Sets, Played, Practiced, Listened, Written, Read, Completed, Solved, Acts, Glasses or Slept.
  • Period. Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly.

Weekly goals run Monday to Sunday. Monthly and yearly goals follow the calendar month and year.

Logging progress

From your day list:

  1. Tap the habit to expand it.
  2. Use – and + to log progress for that day. Choose a step size under Increment by: 1, 5, 10, 20 or 50.

The bar and the "3 of 5" count show progress for the whole period. For a daily goal, tapping the checkbox fills in the full goal for the day.

From the habit editor, the Progress section has a calendar. Pick a day, then use – and + to set the amount for that day. This is the easiest way to fill in past days.

How goals count as complete

  • Daily goals are complete on any day where the logged amount reaches the goal.
  • Weekly, monthly and yearly goals are complete for the period once the total across the period reaches the goal. You can keep logging after that.

These display options help you follow period goals. Each can be turned off in Customize under Habit Display:

OptionWhat you see
Show period subtitle"2 sessions left this week", or "Goal met this week"
Show goal period tagA small Weekly, Monthly or Yearly tag next to the count
Show progress ring on checkboxA partial ring around the checkbox showing period progress
Show period reset indicatorAn orange dot on the first day of a new period if you didn't meet the goal last period
Show period summary bannerThe Period Goals banner at the top of the All and Habits tabs

Reminders for a habit

  1. Open the habit and choose Enable reminders from the ... menu.
  2. Tap Add Reminder. Set the time and use the switch to turn it on or off.
  3. Add as many as you like. Swipe left on one to delete it.
  4. Tap the checkmark to save.

Each reminder repeats every day at its time. The notification shows the habit's name and description. Notifications need permission; see Customization.

To see every habit's reminders in one place, open Manage Habits and tap Manage Habit Reminders.

Mid-period check-ins

For habits with a weekly, monthly or yearly goal, turn on Mid-Period Reminder in the ... menu. When you open Afternoon, it schedules a "Mid-Period Check-in" notification for the middle of the current period, telling you how many you have left. If you've already met the goal, no check-in is sent.

Habit stats

The Analytics section in the habit editor shows:

StatMeaning
Current StreakDays in a row completed, up to today or yesterday. For period goals, periods in a row.
Longest StreakYour best run
CompletionsDays (or periods) completed
Success RateCompletions as a percentage of days (or periods) since the start date

SkippedDays you marked as skipped
Total / TargetFor goal habits: everything you logged, and the sum of every goal since you started

It also lists the goal period, goal amount, start date and end date. For yearly views across all habits, see Analytics.

Manage Habits

Open the menu and tap Manage Habits to see Active Habits and Archived Habits. Tap a habit to edit it, or tap + to create one.

To change several at once:

  1. Tap the select button (a circle with a check) at the top right.
  2. Tap habits to select them, or tap Select All.
  3. Tap Archive, Unarchive or Delete.

Deleting removes the habits and all of their history. This can't be undone.
