AfternoonRelease 2026.10.1

Getting Started

This page walks you through first launch, the main screen and the fastest ways to add things.

Install

  1. Download Afternoon from the App Store. It needs iOS 26 or later.
  2. Open the app. Setup starts automatically.

You don't need an account. If you're signed in to iCloud, your data syncs to your other devices on its own. See Privacy & Data.

First-time setup

Setup has eight short screens. Tap Continue to move on, Back to go back, or Skip (from the second screen on) to jump to the last screen.

  1. Welcome. By continuing, you agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which are linked on this screen.
  2. What's your name? Enter the name for your greeting, or tap Continue as Habitor to skip it. You can change it later in your profile.
  3. Pick Your Theme. Choose light or dark appearance and an accent color.
  4. Interact With Your Schedule. A quick reminder that a single tap expands an item and a double tap opens it for editing.
  5. Enable Notifications. Tap Enable Notifications to allow reminders. You can skip this and turn them on later.
  6. When do you wake up?
  7. When do you go to sleep?
  8. Choose Your Habits. Pick any starter habits from Health & Fitness, Mindfulness, Personal Growth and Productivity, then tap Get Started.

Starter habits come with a daily goal where it makes sense. For example, Drink Water starts at 8 glasses and Read starts at 20 pages. You can change everything later.

TIP

The wake-up and sleep times shown in your day list are set in Customize under Schedule & Reminders. See Customization.

The main screen

The top of the screen has:

  • Your photo or avatar. Tap it to open your profile.
  • A greeting that changes with the time of day (Morning, Afternoon, Evening or Night) and includes your name.
  • The date. Tap it to open Choose Date, a month calendar. Each day shows a ring for how much of that day you completed. Tap a day to jump to it.
  • The menu button (three lines) on the right. See The menu.
  • Four tabs: All, Habits, Tasks and Planner. See Your Day.

On the All, Habits and Tasks tabs, swipe left or right to move to the next or previous day.

Quick Add

The Quick Add bar floats at the bottom of the screen. It's the fastest way to add anything.

  1. Tap the + button at the bottom right. The bar opens.
  2. Tap the icon on the left to choose what you're adding. Each tap moves to the next type: habit, task, reminder, time block, calendar event. The placeholder text tells you which one is selected, for example "Add new task...".
  3. Type a name and tap Done on the keyboard, or tap +.

If you don't type anything for five seconds, the bar closes again.

Dates and times in Quick Add

Quick Add looks for a date and a time in what you type and removes them from the name.

You typeResult
Call mom tomorrow"Call mom", tomorrow
Gym today at 6pm"Gym", today at 6:00 PM
Review notes next week"Review notes", 7 days from now

If you don't include a date, the item goes on the day you're viewing.

What happens next depends on the type:

TypeWhat Quick Add does
HabitCreates the habit starting on that date. If you typed a time, it's used as the habit's time.
TaskCreates the task on that date. To give it a time or notification, edit it afterwards.
ReminderCreates a date reminder that notifies you at 9:00 AM on that date.
Time blockCreates a one-hour time block and opens it so you can adjust it.
Calendar eventOpens the system event editor with a one-hour event filled in. This needs calendar access.

WARNING

Quick Add reads a standalone number as a time. "Read 20 pages" becomes "Read pages" at 8:00 PM. For names with numbers, add the item from Manage Habits or Manage Tasks instead, or edit it after adding.
