Dream Journal
The Dreams tab is your journal. This page covers logging, editing, deleting and sharing dreams, and managing the lists that power suggestions.
The Dreams tab
The top of the tab greets you by name and summarizes last night: how many dreams and nightmares you've logged with a date after 6 PM yesterday.
Below that, your entries are listed newest first by dream date. Each row shows:
- The date.
- A sparkles icon if it was a lucid dream.
- A moon icon for a dream or a storm cloud icon for a nightmare.
- The first two lines of the description.
- Up to three of its people, tags and locations, plus a count of any others.
Two buttons sit at the top of the tab:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Tag icon (top left) | Opens Manage Metadata. See Manage people, locations, tags and sleep aids. |
| + (top right) | Opens Log Dream to add a new entry. |
Log a dream
Tap + to open Log Dream. Fill in what you want, then tap the checkmark in the top right to save. A dream needs a description before it can be saved. Tap the back arrow to leave without saving.
Description
Type what happened in the box that says What happened in your dream? You can also record a voice note and turn it into text.
Date
Set the date and time of the dream. It defaults to now, so change it if you're logging a dream from an earlier night.
Flags
Turn on any that apply:
| Flag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Nightmare | Files the entry as a nightmare instead of a dream. |
| Lucid Dream | You knew you were dreaming. |
| Recurring | You've had this dream before. |
| Nap | The dream happened during a nap rather than overnight sleep. |
| Sleeping Medicine | You took something to help you sleep. Turning this on shows a Sleep Aid field so you can say what you took, and adds a medicine tag to the entry. |
Mood
Pick one mood: Peaceful, Happy, Excited, Confused, Anxious, Sad, Scared or Angry. Tap the selected mood again to clear it.
People, Locations and Tags
Use these to record who was in the dream, where it took place, and any themes. They feed the top people, locations and themes in Analytics.
- To add something new, type it and tap Done on the keyboard.
- Abysm suggests items you've used before. Tap a suggestion to add it. As you type, the suggestions narrow to matches.
- To remove an item from the entry, tap the x on its chip.
Tags are saved in lowercase.
Record a voice note
Use a voice note when you'd rather talk than type.
- In Log Dream, tap Record Voice Note. The first time, allow microphone access.
- Speak. A timer shows how long you've been recording. Tap pause to pause and play to resume.
- Tap stop when you're done. The screen shows Recording Saved.
- Tap play to listen back, or tap Transcribe to turn it into text. The first time, allow speech recognition. The text is added to the description. If the description already has text, the transcription is added below it.
- To discard the recording, tap the trash button and confirm Delete.
Abysm saves only the description text with your dream. The audio is not attached to the entry. Transcription works in English (US).
TIP
If you don't see Record Voice Note, turn off Hide Premium Features in Settings.
View and edit a dream
Tap a dream in the list to open it. Make your changes, then tap the ••• button in the top right and choose Save. Tapping the back arrow leaves without saving your changes.
The ••• menu also has:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Save | Saves your changes. |
| Generate Story | Retells the dream as a short story. See AI Features. |
| Interpret Dream | Writes an interpretation of the dream. See AI Features. |
| Chat with Dream | Opens a chat about this one dream. See AI Features. |
| Share Dream | Creates an image of the dream to share. |
| Delete | Deletes the dream. |
Generate Story, Interpret Dream and Chat with Dream only appear when AI Features is on in Settings.
Share a dream
- Open a dream, tap •••, and choose Share Dream.
- Abysm creates an image card with the dream's type, date and description.
- Tap Share to send it to another app, or Cancel to close.
Delete a dream
Deleting a dream can't be undone. Its saved stories and interpretations are deleted with it.
- From the list: touch and hold a dream, tap Delete, then confirm Delete.
- From an open dream: tap •••, choose Delete, then confirm Delete.
To delete many dreams at once, use the Data options in Settings.
Manage people, locations, tags and sleep aids
Manage Metadata shows every person, location, tag and sleep aid you've used or added, and how many entries use each one.
- On the Dreams tab, tap the tag icon in the top left.
- Choose Tags, People, Locations or Sleep Aids at the top.
From here you can:
- Add an item: tap +, type a name, and tap Add. It then shows up as a suggestion when you log a dream.
- Rename an item: swipe left on it, tap Edit, type the new name, and tap Save. The name changes in every entry that uses it.
- Delete an item: swipe left on it, tap Delete, and confirm. The item is removed from the list and from every entry that uses it.
Items you add here, and sleep aids you chose during setup, are kept on this iPhone only. Items that are used in a dream sync with the dream.
Open a new entry from Shortcuts
Abysm opens Log Dream whenever it's opened with a nightful:// link. You can use this to start a new entry from the Shortcuts app:
- In Shortcuts, create a shortcut with the Open URLs action.
- Set the URL to
nightful://. - Run the shortcut, or add it to your Home Screen or Action button.
