Privacy & Data
Realm Lore keeps your worlds on your Mac. There's no account, no cloud service and no analytics.
What Realm Lore stores and where
Everything is in Realm Lore's app data folder:
~/Library/Application Support/realm-lore/| Item | Location | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| Worlds | Worlds/ | Your entries, chapters, books, maps, images and trash, as plain files. See Worlds & Files. |
| Backups | Backups/ | Automated backups, if you use the default location |
| Map stamps | customStamps/ | Stamp images you've added |
| Plugins | plugins/ | Plugins you've installed |
| App settings | app-settings.json, plugin-settings.json, window-state.json, launched.json | Remote server on or off, which plugins are enabled, window size and position, and whether you've seen the welcome screens |
| Error log | crash.log | Technical details of unexpected errors. It stays on your Mac. |
| Preferences | The app's local storage, in the same folder | Theme and navigation settings, the active world, backup settings, D&D tool data, your writing streak and story word goal |
Downloaded updates are kept in ~/Library/Caches/realm-lore-updater/ until they're installed.
What leaves your Mac
| When | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Every time the app opens | Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com) | To load the fonts the app uses (Cinzel, Inter and Lora). No world data is sent. |
| A few seconds after opening, then every four hours | GitHub (github.com/OddOmens/realm-lore) | To check for and download updates. |
| You use a web address as an entry's image | The website hosting the image | To show the image. |
| You choose View on GitHub or Report an Issue | GitHub, in your browser | To open the page. |
| You turn on Remote Access | Devices on your local network | Lets them open Realm Lore in a browser. Nothing goes to the internet. |
| You install a plugin | Wherever the plugin sends it | Plugins can do anything Realm Lore can, including make network requests. |
Realm Lore doesn't collect usage data or send crash reports.
Permissions
Realm Lore doesn't ask for special permissions. macOS may ask:
- For access to a folder such as Desktop, Documents or Downloads when you import a world or back up there.
- Whether Realm Lore can accept incoming network connections, the first time you turn on Remote Access.
You can review these in System Settings > Privacy & Security and System Settings > Network > Firewall.
Export your data
Your worlds are already plain Markdown files you can copy, open and back up. Realm Lore can also export a world as a ZIP, JSON or Markdown file, and books as EPUB, PDF, HTML or Word. See Backups & Export.
Delete your data
- One world: open it, then use Settings > Data > Delete World. This permanently removes the world's folder.
- Everything: quit Realm Lore, delete the folder
~/Library/Application Support/realm-lore, and drag Realm Lore from Applications to the Trash. Backups saved outside that folder aren't removed, so delete those separately if you want them gone.
