The Shelf
The shelf is where you browse your library. The top bar (or the sidebar, if you chose it in Your Settings) has a tab for each media type, then Lists. Your account menu holds Downloads, Requests, Documents (the in-app docs), Settings, and Admin for admins. The sun and moon button switches between light and dark mode.
Continue Rows
At the top of the shelf, Continue Watching holds the movies and episodes you're partway through, and a Continue row holds the books, comics and audiobooks you're partway through. Each picks up exactly where you stopped.
Shelf Views
Every media type has four views. Each one shows one card per series (or per standalone title), never loose volumes or episodes:
- Alphabetical
- Creator: labelled Author, Director or Studio to suit what you're browsing.
- Disk Folders: how the files sit on disk.
- Custom Folders: your own folders, independent of the disk. Anything not sorted yet is under "Unorganized". Add a title to one with Add to Folder... in its card menu.
Admins can turn off Disk Folders and Custom Folders for everyone in Admin → Features. You choose which of the allowed views you use in Settings → Shelves.
The Movies shelf also has a Collections / All movies switch: Star Wars as one card, or every film on its own.
Filters, Sorting and Search
Filters work in every view:
- Status: Not started, In progress, Finished or Skipped.
- Genre.
- Added: this week, this month or the last 3 months.
- Sort: A–Z, Newest, Recently opened or Release date.
Search in the top bar covers titles, authors, series, descriptions, genres, cast and publishers.
Card Menu
Each card has a ⋯ menu. Depending on the title and your role, it offers:
- Add to Folder... and Remove from Folder for Custom Folders.
- Bookmarks & Notes...
- Edit Metadata... (editors and admins).
- Hide from Shelf. Hidden titles disappear from your own shelves only. Bring them back in Settings → Hidden titles.
On a phone, the menu opens as a sheet from the bottom of the screen.
Title Pages
Every title opens its page first, and you read, listen or watch from there.
- A series (a manga, a book series, a show) lists its volumes, books or episodes, with a filter for All, Not Started, In Progress and Completed, a sort order, and a grid or list layout.
- A single title (a movie, a standalone book or audiobook) gets its own page with its details and one main button.
The main button always picks up at the right place, and speaks the language of the media: Start Reading, Continue Reading · Page 42, Start Listening, Start Watching · S1 · E1.
Title pages also hold your rating (see Together), Bookmarks & Notes, Download and Download Remaining for offline use, and, for editors and admins, Edit Metadata, series settings and Kids. Movies and shows have richer pages, described in Movies and Shows.
Progress
- Everything saves as you go, per person, and follows you to every device.
- Mark as read on any volume, book or episode.
- Mark read up to here: marking one finished when there are unfinished ones before it offers to mark those too, with one tap. Ignore it and it goes away. For shows, specials aren't included unless you're marking a special.
- Mark a whole series read or unread from its page.
- Mark as not started clears your position.
Skipped Volumes
For manga, say because you watched the anime, you can skip volumes one at a time, or with Skip → "I've covered everything through Vol N".
- Skipped volumes count toward series progress.
- Continue and the reader's next-volume jump step over them.
- They're left out of Download Remaining.
- Your read history isn't changed.
- Opening a skipped volume un-skips it.
The shelf's Status filter has a Skipped option, and Unskip all undoes the lot.
Offline Downloads
You can download books, comics, manga, PDFs and audiobooks to read or listen with no connection:
- Install Plinthio as an app over HTTPS (see Installation). Downloads need HTTPS.
- Press Download on a volume, or Download Remaining for everything unfinished in a series.
- Open Downloads from the account menu to see what's stored and how much space it uses. This page opens with no connection at all.
Progress made offline syncs when you're back online. Downloads are per device and per browser. On iPhone, install the app to the home screen first, because Safari may clear data for sites that aren't installed.
Video isn't offered for download. Files are often several gigabytes, more than browsers reliably allow, and many need converting as they play.
Signing in as a different account on the same browser clears the previous account's downloads and queued offline progress from that device.
