Wallets
Every expense, revenue entry and subscription in Fen belongs to a wallet. Use separate wallets to keep personal money apart from a business, or to follow one category of spending or income on its own.
Wallet types
| Type | Use it for | Extra fields |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | Household or everyday finances. | None |
| Business | A business, side job or freelance work. | Business Name, EIN Number, FinCel Number, Business Structure |
| Category | A single area, such as groceries or rent, or a single income source. | Category Type (Expense or Revenue) and Category |
Business Structure options are Sole Proprietorship, DBA, LLC, S Corp and C Corp.
A Category wallet holds only expenses or only revenue, depending on the Category Type you pick. Its Category is a label from a list of 94 personal spending areas, such as Groceries, Rent, Pets, Flights or Home Insurance. You can't change the wallet type of a Category wallet after you create it.
Create a wallet
- On the home screen, tap +.
- Choose a type under Wallet Type.
- Enter a Wallet Name.
- Fill in the business or category fields if they appear.
- Optionally add Notes.
- Tap + in the top right.
Fen won't save a wallet with an empty name or with the same name as another wallet (capitalization doesn't matter).
Open a wallet
Tap a wallet card on the home screen.
Personal and Business wallets open to the wallet screen. The header summarizes the current year: what you've earned, what you've spent, what's available, and what your monthly subscriptions cost over a year. Below it are three cards:
| Card | Shows | Tap to open |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Total revenue for this year and lifetime. | Revenue |
| Expenses | Total expenses for this year and lifetime. | Expenses |
| Subscriptions | Monthly cost and yearly cost. | Subscriptions |
The toolbar on the wallet screen has a chart button that opens Reporting for the wallet, and a pencil button to edit the wallet.
Category wallets open straight to their expense list or revenue list. New expenses in an expense Category wallet start with a matching expense category where one exists (for example, a Rent wallet starts new expenses as Rent Expense).
Balances
Fen calculates every balance from the entries you add:
- This year: revenue minus expenses dated in the current calendar year.
- Lifetime: revenue minus expenses across all dates.
Subscriptions are tracked separately and don't change these balances. See Subscriptions.
Edit a wallet
- On the home screen, long-press a wallet and tap Edit, or
- Open the wallet and tap the pencil button.
Change the fields and tap the checkmark to save.
Delete a wallet
- Long-press the wallet on the home screen and tap Delete, or open the edit screen and tap Delete Wallet.
- Confirm with Delete.
WARNING
Deleting a wallet also permanently deletes all of its expenses, revenue and subscriptions, and any Net Worth assets linked to it. This can't be undone.
