Privacy & Data
Abysm doesn't have accounts, and Odd Omens has no server that stores your journal. Your dreams stay on your iPhone and in your own iCloud account.
What Abysm stores
| Data | Where it's kept |
|---|---|
| Dream entries: description, date, flags, mood, people, locations, tags and sleep aids | On your iPhone, and in your private iCloud database when iCloud is on |
| Generated stories and interpretations | Same as dream entries |
| Your name, bedtime, wake-up time, intentions and the sleep aids you chose during setup | On your iPhone only |
| Items you added in Manage Metadata | On your iPhone only |
| Settings such as highlight color and AI Features | On your iPhone only |
| Voice note recordings | On your iPhone only. The recording isn't attached to the dream. Only the transcribed text is saved in the entry. |
| Chat conversations | Not stored. They're cleared when you reset the chat or leave it. |
iCloud sync
If you're signed in to iCloud, Abysm syncs your dream entries, stories and interpretations through your private iCloud database, so they appear on your other iPhones signed in to the same Apple Account. Odd Omens can't read this data. To stop syncing, turn off iCloud for Abysm in the iOS Settings app under your name > iCloud.
What leaves your iPhone
| Destination | What's sent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your iCloud account (Apple) | Dream entries, stories and interpretations | iCloud sync and backup |
| Apple speech recognition | The voice note you tap Transcribe on | To turn your recording into text. Apple may process the audio on its servers. |
| oddomens.com | A request for a small file with the date of the current Terms of Service. Nothing about you or your dreams is sent. | So Abysm can tell you when the Terms or Privacy Policy change |
Abysm's AI features use Apple's on-device language model. Your dreams aren't sent to Odd Omens, OpenAI, or any other AI provider.
Abysm has no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools. Since version 2026.10.1, it no longer sends any usage analytics.
Links in Settings, such as the website, App Store, X, privacy policy and support email, open in other apps. Nothing is sent until you choose to.
Permissions
| Permission | When it's asked | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | The first time you tap Record Voice Note | Recording voice notes |
| Speech Recognition | The first time you tap Transcribe | Turning a voice note into text |
| Notifications | If you tap Turn on Notifications during setup | Allowing Abysm to send notifications |
You can change these at any time in the iOS Settings app under Abysm.
Export your data
Abysm doesn't have an export feature. You can share individual dreams as images with Share Dream, and your yearly statistics with the share button on the Analytics tab. See Dream Journal.
Delete your data
- One dream: touch and hold it in the list and tap Delete, or open it and choose Delete from the ••• menu.
- Many dreams: in Settings > Data, use Clear All Data, Clear Dreams or Clear Nightmares.
- Everything on this iPhone: delete the Abysm app. This removes your entries, settings, profile and recordings from the device.
- Your iCloud copy: in the iOS Settings app, go to your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage, choose Abysm, and delete its data.
Deleted data can't be recovered.
