Managing Files
Beaver can rename, duplicate, move and delete the real files in your linked folders. Changes made this way keep each asset's tags, rating and notes, which isn't the case if you make the same change in Finder.
Selecting assets
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Select one asset | Click it. |
| Add or remove an asset from a multi-selection | ⌘-click it, or hover and tick the checkbox in its top-left corner. |
| Add the selected asset to a multi-selection from the keyboard | Press Space. |
| Clear a multi-selection | Click Clear in the toolbar. |
With one asset selected, the toolbar shows View, Rename, Duplicate, Move and Delete. With several selected, it shows how many (for example 3 selected) and the same actions apply to all of them.
Open and reveal
- Open in the default app: hover over the preview at the top of the inspector and click it. Images open in Preview, for example.
- Show in Finder: click the Folder row in the inspector.
- Copy the file path: hover over the path at the bottom of the inspector and click the copy button.
Rename
One file
- Select the asset and click Rename.
- Type the new name. You don't need to type the extension; Beaver keeps it.
- Press Return or click Rename.
If a file with that name already exists in the same folder, Beaver leaves the original file as it is.
Several files at once
- Select the assets and click Rename.
- Enter a base name, for example
moodboard. - Confirm. Beaver renames the files
moodboard-1,moodboard-2and so on, keeping each file's extension.
Any file whose new name is already taken is skipped.
Duplicate
Select one or more assets and click Duplicate. Each copy is saved in the same folder as the original, named with -copy (for example logo-copy.png, then logo-copy-2.png). Copies start without tags, ratings or notes.
Move to another folder
- Select one or more assets and click Move.
- In Move to Folder, pick a destination. The list has your linked folders and their subfolders. Type in Search target folders... to narrow it.
Beaver moves the files on disk and keeps their tags, ratings and notes. If a file with the same name is already in the destination, the moved file gets a number added (-1, -2, and so on) instead of replacing anything. When that happens, or a file can't be moved, Beaver shows a Move Complete summary.
Delete
- Select one or more assets and click Delete.
- Click Confirm in the Move to Trash dialog.
The files go to the macOS Trash, and Beaver removes them from the library along with their tags, ratings and notes. If you put a file back from the Trash into a linked folder, Beaver indexes it again as a new asset.
Remove background
Beaver can cut the background out of PNG, JPG, JPEG and WebP images.
- Select the image.
- Click Remove Background in the inspector. The button reads Removing background… while it works.
Beaver saves the result as a new PNG with a transparent background next to the original, named with -nobg (for example portrait-nobg.png). The original isn't changed. The new file is added to your library.
INFO
The image is processed on your Mac and isn't uploaded anywhere. The first time you use the feature, Beaver downloads the background-removal model from IMG.LY's servers, so you need an internet connection. See Privacy & Data.
